The Show Must Go on
Local touring opera company, Opera in a Box, aims to bring opera to a diverse audience in off-the-wall venues, and this is exactly what they planned to do with their latest production of Verdi's La Traviata. The production was set to take place in Bristol's Bierkeller prior to an announcement on the venue's facebook page that the venue would suddenly be closing for reconstruction on Wednesday 7th February.
With a first performance on Sunday 11th February at 6pm, the cast of 10 have been working tirelessly over the past few months to perfect their up-coming production. A successful dress and technical rehearsal at the Bierkeller on Sunday 4th February left the cast and crew feeling very optimistic with only a week until the performances began.
Finding out only four days before the opening performance was seen as a challenge rather than a show-stopper for the young opera company, as they endeavoured to seek a new venue to host their performances on the same dates in order to ensure the public and ticket holders were not left disappointed. Thanks to the support of The Alma Tavern & Theatre and 1532 Performing Arts Centre, the production team have managed to secure new venues so the performance can go ahead as planned. Performances will be at The Alma Tavern on Sunday 11 February at 6pm and Thursday 15 February at 7.30pm, and at The Mackay Theatre, 1532 Performing Arts Centre on Sunday 18 February at 6pm.
Opera in a Box are determined to bring its fresh take on La Traviata to audiences in Bristol, and this small bump in the road will only add character to what will be a unique performance. It is a testament to the team and cast’s professionalism and ability to adapt at short notice. Opera in a Box are calling for YOUR help in spreading the word far and wide to ensure ticket holders and members of the public are aware of the new venues, and that the performances will still continue. The show MUST go on!
